How SiC Power devices shape the future of power electronics
Megatrends like decarbonization and digitalization elevate the role of power electronics and efficient power semiconductors as key elements in such systems. On the one hand, we foresee a tremendous increase in electricity demand, driven by population growth and the electrification of society as well as by e-mobility. At the same time, we need to eliminate fossil fuels as a source for generating electricity and thus, renewable energy sources and related storage systems will dominate the future of the power grid. This necessitates deployment of a significant amount of power electronics, far more than those used in traditional grids where such systems are normally employed only on the consumption side. This tutorial will give insights into the future of energy flow, the role of the power electronics within, and why WBG power semiconductors are enabling components.
